It was a cagey start for the Swans as Retford were threatening from the start. Barton were playing some brilliant football and Will Waudby in particular was having some luck down the left hand side.
Seven minutes in and Retford had the first real chance of the game. The initial shot was well saved by Harvey Cartwright and the follow up effort sailed over the bar.
The first goal of the game came on 23 minutes when Disley played a fantastic ball over to Waudby. He linked up with Mitch Langton and Waudby played in a low ball across the area that found Hinchliffe. He hit it first time into the top left corner to put Barton in the lead.
Despite the visitors being in the lead, Retford were threatening and Evans-Booth was testing the Swans defence.
Jamie Goddard was introduced for Joe Busby at the break and the Swans were almost two ahead on 63 minutes. The ball was played in and Reece Moody’s flicked on header almost got the better of the Retford ‘keeper as he tipped it over the bar.
Shortly before Moody’s chance Hinchliffe was tackled and stayed down. Swans boss Dave Ricardo brought him off for Cooper, and was just precautionary as Hinchliffe was fine.
Tom Waudby was introduced after 70 minutes and within seconds he gave away a penalty. Evans-Booth stepped up and equalized for the hosts, and it wasn’t undeserved. Retford, an NCEL Division One side, had more than matched the Swans.
Waudby redeemed himself for giving away the penalty however as his run and shot was saved by the ‘keeper and Cooper was on hand to tap the ball home and restore Barton’s lead.
With ten minutes to go Waudby proved his worth again, he won two tackles and passed the ball to Goddard. He passed to Disley, and the Swans skipper curled the ball into the bottom corner to seal the win and see the Swans through to the next round.
Swans boss Dave Ricardo spoke following the game.
We’re through to the next round of the Vase, were you happy with the level of performance the lads showed?
DR: “In the main the guys did what they had to do and played well. There are areas for improvement for sure but when we played in their half I thought the attacking play was very good. We were put under pressure from a number of set pieces which we defended well from in particular our young keeper who was excellent in terms of decision making. In the main the guys did what they had to do and played well.”
Cup runs often kick start season’s, do you think this is the springboard for us to start our season?
“I feel it should help the lads in terms of confidence rather than a complete springboard. We’ve been very good in games especially the two FA cup ties against higher opposition who have incidentally started their league seasons strongly. In the league performances thus far we have played well in patches but conceded stupid goals due to individual errors which have been minimised in the last two games although not eradicated totally.”
We have Nostell in the next round, do you know anything about them already?
“Nostell are managed by two experienced lads who know the game well which is similar to their players. I will be amazed if they don’t finish in the top 4 in their league and know the threat they carry out going forward. I can see a lot of goals in the game!“
Good photos and report, three quality goals
