The Reserves put in a much improved performance at the Easy Buy Stadium on Saturday but still came up short in a frustrating 1-0 loss to second placed Westella and Willerby thanks to an Alex Wood strike on the hour.

The Reserves were at full strength for the first time in weeks and into the starting 11 came new signing Tom Wilson, Declan Marshall returned from injury and Jon-Paul Broughton (Toko) came out of retirement.

The opening half hour was as you’d expect both sides trying to get a foothold on the game, tackles flying in and both sides defending well. Sam Wood was forced into making a fine point blank save on the follow up from a Westella set piece.

Wilson had a long range effort blocked and Marshall shot over the bar as both sides looked to break the deadlock.

Westella started the second half brighter than the hosts and Wood was again brought into action in the 47th minute tipping over a Vazquez effort.

Westella took the lead on the hour mark after the ball had landed on the edge of the 18 yard box after Barton had failed attempts to clear their lines. Alex Wood had a go and saw it fly into the net, much against the balance of the game.

This brought a change as Whall replaced Finnis and instantly Barton began to try and get back into the game. Dixon worked well with Marshall down the right hand side and delivered a wonderful ball which Wilson got his head to and cannoned of the face of the bar.

Matt Graves and Bryn Everitt were introduced as Barton’s attempt to get what would have been a deserved point continued and Everitt saw his effort cleared of the line in the 83rd minute.

The final chance of the afternoon saw Kian Salter go close as his left footed strike from long range looked like it was going into the top corner but just continued to rise above the bar in the dying stages to see Westella dig in and hold on to the three points.

A very good competitive game, and a much improved performance from the Reserves.
