Former Swans Mike Thompson and Gary Allanson were in the dugout for Beverley with a few familiar faces out on the pitch too. Barton took just two minutes to take the lead.

Josh Lacey laid the ball off to Matt Plummer, who swung it in first time with Josh Batty on hand to prod it past the ‘keeper to open the scoring.

Ryan Caulfield on the ball for the Swans.

After 12 minutes the Swans doubled their lead. A fine run from Scott Matthews down the left saw him swing the ball in to the area. Lacey was on hand to smash it in from around 12 yards out to cap off some fine football from Barton.

The third goal came just after the half hour mark as Batty whipped in a delicious ball, with Grant Tait rising like a salmon to head it home. A goal reminiscent of his finish against Scunthorpe United U18’s last Saturday. His third in three games.

Beverley played some good football, and got on the scoresheet too just before half time. A brilliant cross field diagonal from former Swan Danny Norton, set up Olly Baldwin, who powered past Charlie Dixon to get Beverley back in the game at 3-1.

It was four just after the hour mark as some fine work from Batty in the area saw the ball fall to Luke Anderson just inside the area. He curled his effort first time in to the top corner with a fine finish.

The Swans won a penalty soon after after a blatant foul in the area. Batty stepped up and hit the shot low to his left. However the keeper pulled off a brilliant save to deny the Swans forward, with the rebound sent over.

Barton capped off a fine performance with a fifth goal ten minutes before the end as the ball fell to Adam Millson in the area. He bundled the ball home and got on the scoresheet.

Beverley were a strong test for the Swans, and the scoreline perhaps doesn’t tell the real story of the game. They played good football but the Swans were too strong in the end.
