Swans fall to defeat against Cleethorpes Town
29th August 2020Barton Town fell to a 4-1 loss to Cleethorpes Town at the Easy Buy Stadium in our final pre-season friendly.
A largely uneventful first half so the teams go in goalless at the break. Noel Burdett opened the scoring on 50 minutes with a brilliant strike.
Cleethorpes substitute Scott Vernon scored twice in four minutes to put the visitors ahead before a brilliant goal from Tom Oglesby made it three. Vernon completed his hat-trick late on and would have had a fourth if not for a Charlie Dixon penalty save.

The first half saw both sides fight, but there was little to report on in terms of clear cut chances. This was in part thanks to two resolute sets of defenders.
The best chance fell to the visitors. Cleethorpes grabbed the ball and the attacker made a run into the area. The ball was squared and was destined to go in but Matt Plummer pulled off a brilliant goal line clearance to keep the score goalless at half time.
Five minutes after the break the Swans were ahead. Noel Burdett received the ball and cut onto his right foot. He struck a fantastic effort which cannoned in off the bar.
Cleethorpes then introduced Scott Vernon into the game off the bench, and had a huge impact on the second half. On 67 minutes he got Cleethorpes back on level terms. He got the ball and drilled it low past Dixon into the bottom right corner.
Seven minutes later he put the visitors ahead as the ball fell to him. In a scramble with Dixon he managed to hook the ball in to give the hosts a lead they never surrendered.
Moments later they had scored another, this time through Tom Oglesby. The ball fell to him on the edge of the area and he hit a venomous shot first time which flew past Dixon. A brilliant finish.
With two minutes to go Vernon had his hat-trick. The cross came in and it beat Dixon. Vernon was there to head it home and seal the win for the Northern Premier League side.
He had a chance to add a fourth goal when Josh Lacey fouled in the area. Vernon struck to his right but Dixon pulled off a fantastic save to deny Cleethorpes as the whistle blew for full time.
