Barton Town maintained their unbeaten start to the season with a frustrating 0-0 draw at Maltby Main.

The Swans left Muglet Lane with a point and a clean sheet in a resolute defensive display, but were frustrated up front with a few chances going astray. A draw a fair result with neither side doing enough to take the three points.

The hosts were forced into an early change, with Ross Duggan departing due to injury. Swans fans are still having nightmares of Duggan’s lethal performance at AFC Mansfield last season, scoring four first half goals and putting an end to our unbeaten away run.

The first big chance of the half came 15 minutes in when Maltby were on the attack. Brandon Bagley shot from six yards out, forcing an excellent point blank save out of Charlie Dixon in the Swans net.

Soon after Tom Waudby went on a mazing run from the left. He cut inside before glancing his shot just wide. He had another chance before half time to give the Swans the lead. He picked the ball up in the middle of the park before running at the Maltby defence. He teed up a shot which went over the bar.

Ten minutes after the break Harrison Coley was in a favourable position, shooting from the edge of the area. His left footed shot went over, and soon after he was brought off for the returning Ben Hinchliffe.

The Maltby goalkeeper had to be alert when Scott Matthews shot from the left. His effort dipping but the keeper tipped it over the bar for a corner.

With 20 minutes to go Maltby almost broke the deadlock. The attacker’s shot slid under Dixon, but Josh Lacey was on hand to clear it off the line.

Moments later the Swans were in, when Will Waudby played in Hinchliffe. His shot bobbling as he skied it over the bar. Chris Spinks was then brought on to try and help find that winner.

Barton had a penalty shout on 78 minutes, when Josh Lacey was felled inside the area, the referee preferring to book Lacey for diving.

The final and perhaps best chance of the game came in stoppage time when Spinks was played in. His shot went through the legs of the defender but was dragged agonisingly wide of the post.

A point gained from a very tough place to go, but on another day it could easily have been three points. As the game went on, a winner for either side would have been unfair.
