Ten-man Barton Town’s first home game in seven weeks ended in a heavy defeat at the hands of table-topping Emley AFC.

After a goalless first half, Fraser Papprill saw red early in the second half, and with the Swans playing 20 minutes with nine men due to two separate sin-bins, Emley took advantage. A brace from Iyrwah Gooden, and further goals from James Walshaw, Ross Hardaker and Joe Kenny secured a big win for the visitors.

There was only one change from the last game, a 3-3 draw at Penistone Church. Henry Cook came in for Iwan Heeley, who dropped to the bench. James Playford returned to the bench with Josh Smaller back after being unavailable for the previous game.

It was a cagey opening 15 minutes, with both sides trying to get a foothold on the game. Emley had the better of it with chances from Isaac Baldwin and James Walshaw with the Swans’ first chance coming when a lob from distance almost caught out the Emley ‘keeper before rolling wide.

Just before the half-hour mark Will Waudby swung in a free kick which was met by the head of Matt Clayton. His header was well saved by the Emley ‘keeper.

There was nothing between the teams at the half time whistle. The Swans were repelling the Emley attack well, considering their front two had scored 47 goals between them.

Soon after the break a Barton free kick was met by Fraser Papprill but he couldn’t get it on target; hitting the side netting. This would turn out to be his last action in the game.

After an Emley free-kick was given, Papprill was shown a red card for dissent from the referee. When Tom Waudby tried to reason with the referee he was sent to the sin-bin. Leaving Barton with nine men for the next ten minutes. Henry Cook was sacrificed with Josh Smaller filling the gap in defence.

Emley certainly took advantage of being two men up, with Iyrwah Gooden striking the bar with a venomous effort. Seconds later he drilled a shot from distance which Jordan Douglas spilled into the back of the net.

On the hour mark it was two, Barton still down to nine as a cross came in from the left. Douglas came out to palm the ball away but it ricocheted off the head of James Walshaw and into the back of the net.

Tom Waudby was back on the pitch but couldn’t do anything to stop Emley going three up. Alex Metcalfe with a shot from the right which was parried by Douglas into the path of Gooden. He gratefully volleyed it in to score his second and Emley’s third.

The Swans were offered a chance back into the game when Reece Moody was fouled in the area and the referee awarded the penalty. Up stepped Tom Waudby but his spot kick drilled down the middle was saved by the outstretched leg of Petrovic in the Emley goal.

With 15 minutes to go Emley made sure of the points with a fourth goal. A free kick was blocked by the Swans wall before the rebound was crossed into the area. Ross Hardaker’s header looped over Douglas into the back of the net.

Seconds later it was five, Joe Kenny struck from just outside the area and the ball rolled into the bottom corner. The visitors making the extra man count.

Will Waudby was sent to the sin bin with moments to go but the damage was well and truly done. The red card derailing the Swans momentum and a clinical side which are likely to win the league at a canter, meant it wasn’t Barton’s afternoon.
