Swans out of Vase with Cheadle Town defeat

Three goals in three minutes were Barton Town’s undoing in their FA Vase First Round defeat to Cheadle Town at the Easy Buy Stadium.

A Ben Hinchliffe brace for the Swans wasn’t enough to defeat Cheadle, with Patrick Davin scoring twice, Callum McGlynn and Ryan Usher doing the damage for the visitors. A red card for Cheadle’s Liam Moran 15 minutes from time wasn’t enough for the Swans to overcome them.

With Charlie Dixon still out injured and Ben Voase ineligible, Reserves goalkeeper Patrick Shaw started in goal for the Swans. Craig King returned having missed the midweek defeat to Bottesford.

Cheadle had the first chance of the game, when captain Patrick Davin dragged his shot across the face of goal following his left footed effort. The Swans then began to pressure, with a Josh Lacey through ball resulting in a mix up between goalkeeper and defender. Chris Spinks was on hand to shoot but his chance was was blocked by Liam Moran and headed out for a corner.

A Jack Tanser pass was intercepted by the Cheadle attack but the resulting shot went high and wide, with the visitors enjoying most of the early possession. However they soon fell behind to a well-worked Swans goal.

Craig King passed to Will Waudby, who beat the full back with pace and crossed to the back post. Brother Tom Waudby was on hand to head it back across goal with Ben Hinchliffe performing an overhead kick to put the ball in the top corner and give the Swans the lead. An excellent finish from the striker.

He had the ball in the net again on the half-hour mark but it was ruled out for a foul in the build-up. The Swans then won a free kick on the edge of the area in a promising position. Spinks stepped up but curled his shot wide of the goal.

The last two minutes of the half turned the tide of the game well and truly. Lacey pulled off an incredible goal line clearance to deny Cheadle, but Davin soon put it right. In stoppage time he lashed his effort past Shaw in to the bottom corner to equalise. Seconds later they scored again. A melee in the area wasn’t cleared and Callum McGlynn managed to bundle the ball over the line to put Cheadle ahead.

A shell-shocked Swans side made a change at the break with Tanser being replaced by Henry Cook. Will Waudby fired over from close range seconds after the restart. But just three minutes into the half Barton’s fate was all but sealed.

Ryan Usher ran onto a neat through ball, he tapped it past the onrushing Shaw before tapping it into an empty net, despite the best efforts of Scott Matthews to clear it. Cheadle were 3-1 up and a calamitous five minutes of football had seemingly condemned the Swans.

Davin almost scored a fourth for Cheadle when his header at the back post went just wide. It was then Barton’s turn to attack, with a through ball over the top finding Tom Waudby in space. The winger tried to lob the goalkeeper but his shot was saved before the rebound was put out for a corner.

With 20 minutes to go Hinchliffe was in space, before pulling off another excellent overhead kick, this time with his weaker foot. Incredible technique but to no avail as his effort was ruled out for an offside in the build-up.

This didn’t deter the striker however, as substitute Nathan Jarman, who brought himself on, flicked the ball into Hinchliffe’s path. He slotted it under the goalkeeper to make things interesting. The fourth time Hinchliffe had put the ball in the net.

During the celebrations however Will Waudby was trying to receive the ball when he was pushed over by Cheadle’s number four. A melee ensued with Liam Moran reacting out and being sent off by the referee. Another Cheadle player was sent to the sin bin during the same incident as it all kicked off.

Once the game resumed the Swans were fighting for an equaliser. Will Waudby swung the ball to the back post but Tom Waudby couldn’t get his header on target.

Three minutes from the end though Cheadle broke clear and Davin scored his second of the game. Beating Shaw with a neat strike which went in off the post.

Shaw did deny Davin a hat-trick though, when he was through on goal. He tried to curl it in with his left foot but Shaw was level to it and tipped it over for a corner.

The visitors took the win and advance to the next round, the Swans had played well in spells but Cheadle’s clinical finishing saw them take the win.
