Barton Town fell to a 5-2 defeat at local neighbours Grimsby Borough at the Bradley Football Centre.

Lewis Bemrose gave Boro the lead after just two minutes. Ben Hinchliffe scored a penalty on the stroke of half time to give the Swans hope. Joel Sutton gave Barton the lead before three Grimsby goals in five minutes effectively killed off the game. Josh Venney added a fifth for Grimsby to compound the misery for Barton.

There were four changes for Barton, with Levi Tarbotton, Mitch Langton, Tom Waudby and Marc Cooper coming in for Matt Plummer (suspended), Tom Sawyer (injured), Joe Busby and Reece Moody.

It took just two minutes for the Swans to concede. A fine strike from Lewis Bemrose on the edge of the area beat Harvey Cartwright and put Grimsby into the lead.

It was all Grimsby in the opening proceedings. The ball was squared into the area but Bemrose couldn’t quite get to it and the chance went begging. Bemrose then was booked for a late challenge on Cartwright.

The young goalkeeper then pulled off a fine save to stop Grimsby from doubling their lead.

On the half hour mark the Swans were forced into an early change as Tom Waudby hobbled off with a dead leg and was replaced by Joel Sutton.

On the stroke of half time Ben Hinchliffe ran clear, chasing a ball which fell into the Grimsby ‘keeper’s arms. However, he was pulled back by a Boro defender and brought down, winning a penalty. He dusted himself down and slotted the penalty in with the last kick of the half.

Three minutes into the second half Sutton won a free kick on the edge of the area. Sutton stepped up and curled the ball over the wall and into the bottom corner to score his first goal since his comeback from a broken leg.

Barton were ahead and looking to kill the game off, but just as they did against Nostell last week, the Swans collapsed in a disastrous five minute spell.

On 58 minutes a mishap at the back saw the ball fall to Adam Drury, who had no hesitation in tapping the ball in for an equaliser.

Two minutes later a game of head tennis in our area saw Jack Debnam head it past Cartwright to put Grimsby back in the lead.

63 minutes in and it was 4-2. A well taken finish from Caine Winfarrah meant Barton had capitulated yet again.

The Swans’ first use of the sin bin this season came on 65 minutes as Marc Cooper went off for ten minutes.

On 87 minutes Josh Venney capitalised on a Cartwright spill and slotted the ball home to round off a fine display from Grimsby and another game of what could have been for Barton.
