Conditions were poor at the Victoria Pleasure Ground, as rain poured from kick off. It took just seven minutes for the Swans to take the lead as Tom Waudby’s excellent run down the right resulted in a ball across the face of goal. Danny North was on hand with a vintage tap-in to put Barton in front.
A feisty encounter throughout, the Swans were holding off a Goole side which were quick going forward and dangerous on the counter. Oliver Russon pulling the strings for the hosts, his effort soon before half time wasn’t troubling Charlie Dixon in the Swans goal.
However moments later a lobbed through ball wasn’t dealt with, and Russon rose above Dixon to head the ball. Josh Lacey cleared it off the line before the rebound hit the bar before being cleared again by Henry Cook. A let off for the Swans and an example of how dangerous Goole could be.
The game mirrored the last time Barton visited Goole. A rainy night, a 2-1 winning scoreline, and Sam Cable scoring a second half penalty.
The Goole attacker was played in and when trying to round Dixon, was brought down by the Swans ‘keeper, who was booked. Up stepped Cable to score and bring Goole back into the game.
Shortly before the hour mark North was presented with a golden chance when the Goole goalkeepers clearance fell to him. One on one the Swans striker’s shot was saved by the keeper before being cleared. North again had a chance as his deft lobbed effort from the edge of the box went just wide of the goal.
North was then replaced by Swans boss Jarman, who brought himself on and made an instant impact. Five minutes after coming on he was teed up on the edge of the area. He curled a left footed shot into the top corner to secure the win for the Swans, and prove he could still do it.
Seconds after the restart Goole were on the attack. The first strike was well saved by Dixon with his legs. The follow up wasn’t cleared and they were in again, but again Dixon saved with his legs before the ball was cleared. Incredible goalkeeping to ensure the Swans stayed ahead.
A second win in a row for the Swans and the unbeaten start to the season remains intact.
