Bottesford Town knocked ten-man Barton Town out of another cup competition at Birch Park with a narrow win thanks to Joe Simpson’s goal on the stroke of half time.

Having already defeated the Swans in the FA Cup, the Poachers were resilient to hold on for a win against a Barton side who were dominant throughout.

The first chance came after just eight minutes as a run from Josh Lacey resulted in a cross from the right. It found Will Waudby free on the left, with his shot ending up on the roof of the net.

Barton were edging the first half with half chances but nothing of note. Just before the half hour mark Henry Cook made a late challenge on a Bottesford player, with the referee not hesitating in sending off the Swans midfielder. Barton had to play the rest of the game with ten.

Soon after the Swans had a free kick 25 yards out. Chris Spinks drilled it at goal but it was well saved by Jordan Quibell, who won the hosts’ man of the match award, and deservedly so. He kept the Swans out with some vital saves.

Moments before the break Mason Ellender swung a ball into the area, with Joe Simpson rising above Taron Hare to head it over Ben Voase and into the back of the net. The Swans were behind at the break, but Ben Hinchliffe had an excellent chance just before half time. The ball fell to him in the area but his turn and shot was saved by Quibell.

Ten minutes after the break Tom Waudby dragged his shot wide of the goal before Scott Matthews swung in a free kick, which almost caught Quibell out, but he pulled off another good save.

Bottesford almost made it two against the run of play when Ryan Thompson’s venomous shot from inside the area was well saved by Voase, a point blank stop from the Hull City loanee.

It was easy to forget the Swans only had ten men, as they had enjoyed more of the possession and half chances which just wouldn’t drop. Bottesford were resilient, dug in and secured the win, and passage to the next round.
