Dev Squad knocked out of County Cup by strong Deeping Rangers side
30th January 2023Barton Town Development | 0-2 | Deeping Rangers U18 |
Report by Simon Burnett
Today we welcomed Deeping Rangers to Barton for the quarter final of the Lincs Under 18 County Cup.
We started really slowly and Deeping bossed the first 20 minutes spraying the ball around really well and made us look second to everything.

They took the lead deservedly after we weren’t able to clear as the ball bounced about edge of our box and a decent shot found the back of the net.
Deservedly 1-0 down, the lads woke up a little bit but still not at the races despite competing better with four in midfield now after a move around.
Sopp came on for Burnett after a knock and did well to close Deeping down and break things up further forward.
While a better match for Deeping now we went into half time deservedly 1-0 down but still in it at this stage.
Second half kick off and despite our determination to get back in the game we were now more open as were Deeping, so felt a better situation for us. But we gave the ball away and they cut across the edge of the box and placed a shot perfectly into the corner for 2-0 and took control of the tie.
Last 15/20 minutes the game opened up as we tried to get back in the tie but nothing materialised despite looking more threatening.
Deeping managed the game out for a deserved win against a below par Development squad and we are gracious in defeat.
Big credit to Hewitt, Ransford, Schultz and Sopp today for doing really well when we needed them from the bench and taking their opportunity for minutes today well.
Parker and Croft shone today in terms of effort in a lacklustre Swans side.
Today will be a huge wake up call for us after such a great start to the season. Deeping were the better side and deserve their place in the Semi final after controlling us for most of the game and we wish them the best of luck in the remainder of the cup.
We will learn a lot from this tie and aim to bounce back at the Easy Buy next week.
